A cameraman gets injured by a football player while covering a
Browns game in
Cleveland, Ohio and goes to the hospital. There, his cunning brother-in-law (who happens to be a lawyer) convinces him to pretend that his legs have been paralyzed. This way, they can receive a huge indemnity from the insurance company. Of course, the insurance company's men suspect that the paralysis is a fake one, and so a big "game" begins.
Walter Matthau won the Oscar for Best Actor in a Supporting Role in this film. And the movie was also nominated for Art Direction-Set Decoration (Black-and-White), Best Cinematography (Black-and-White) & Best Writing, Story and Screenplay at the Oscars. Walter Matthau was also nominated a Golden Globe for Best Motion Picture Actor - Musical/Comedy.
