True Combat: Elite

True Combat: Elite in the map dem_snow

True Combat: Elite (TC:E or TC:Elite) is a modification for the freeware first person shooter game Wolfenstein: Enemy Territory by Team Terminator and Groove Six Studios, started in the late 2004. It is an offspring to a Quake 3 modification called True Combat, which is similar in several aspects and maintains the basic game concept.

Gameplay

:''At its current public version, is still a "test version" with 0.48 and an update of 0.48 being the only public version so far. Therefore most of the elements in the game are going to change. The information here is consistent with and based upon the 0.48 update version of True Combat: Elite.

Overview

Ironsights from an MP5 in True Combat: Elite.

The game is a modern realism shooter. This has caused a perception of it being a "Counter-Strike mod for Enemy Territory"; but it is actually very different from Counter-Strike, especially in the aspects of realism, although it does share game modes familiar to Counter-Strike players, such as bomb disarming. One of the most notable features, which especially newbies get confused with is that there is no crosshair. Instead, iron sights are used, and thus this mod is more similar to Hostile Intent, another Half-Life mod. The game's development team hasn't yet been able to achieve all of the expected features. For instance, animations are still the default Enemy Territory animations, although True Combat: Elite is pushing the engine to the maximum performance. There are five maps shipped with version 0.48, which are themed around typical modern conflict environments, both urban and rural conditions. Teams consist of several classes and a large weapon arsenal is available.

Teams

The game features two different teams, Terrorists and SpecOps (a portmanteau for "special operation forces"). There are three classes for both teams:
* Assault - Has access to assault-rifles, pistols, a semi-automatic/pump-action shotgun, and all three grenade types.
* Recon - Has access to submachineguns, silenced submachineguns, a pump-action only shotgun, optional techkit (instead of grenades), and akimbo pistols. The fastest class, movement speed wise.
* Sniper - Has access to sniper rifles, pistols, and only flash and smoke grenades. Slower and less mobile due to the heavier load.

Weapons

There are a total of 32 weapons in True Combat: Elite. Both teams have 16 weapons. The other 5 weapons are available for both.Assault rifles

Game modes

Objective

In the objective mode mode, a random player from the terrorist team gets the bomb and the terrorists have two targets to plant a bomb at: "A" or "B". Anyone from the SpecOps has an ability to disarm the bomb. If the bomb is disarmed, the SpecOps win; if not, the terrorists win. If another team eliminates the other team, they win. If the SpecOps eliminate the terrorist team when the bomb is planted, the bomb must be defused in order for the SpecOps to win. The idea is very similar to Counter-Strike bomb-disarming. As in Counter-Strike, the recon class can use a techkit to disarm the bomb faster. There can also be more than two objectives, however it requires advanced map scripting.

Bodycount

Bodycount is a team deathmatch game where the team scoring the most points wins. Players are capable of respawning.

Release Controversy

TC:E has had the planned update to version 0.49b delayed many times. news updates are often sparse, and many people have left the mod. The release date was originally similar to that of Duke Nukem Forever as "When it's Done" and though it has had sparse estimations from time to time (most notably the recent delays from March 31st 2006 to an estimated second quarter release) there is no hard-set date for its release.
