USS Enterprise

: For other references see HMS Enterprise.USS Enterprise may refer to:

United States Navy

Eight ships in the United States Navy have carried the name Enterprise. The prefix USS (for United States Ship) was not used until the late 1790s[1], and until 1907 was only one of a number of prefixes used. Since 1907 the prefix has been used for all commissioned (and only for commissioned) ships of the U.S. Navy. In common usage, ship name prefixes are often applied retroactively to ships of the line that would have had said prefix under current practice. The Dictionary of American Naval Fighting Ships defines Enterprise as "Boldness, energy, and invention in practical affairs." (DANFS Vol II (1963), p. 355)

Continental Navy of the United States

* USS Enterprise (1775-05-18 â€" 1777-07-07), the first ship to bear this name, was originally the uncommissioned British sloop George, captured by American forces in the Revolutionary War. Rechristened Enterprise, she served on Lake Champlain. â€" Navy File
* Enterprise (1776-12-20 â€" 1777 February), the second ship to bear this name, was a successful privateer before she was purchased for the Continental Navy. Commanded by Captain Joseph Campbell, the schooner Enterprise operated principally in Chesapeake Bay. She convoyed transports, carried out reconnaissance, and guarded the shores against foraging raids by the British. Only meager records of her service have been found; they indicate that she was apparently returned to the Maryland Council of Safety. â€" Navy File: Due to the concurrent service of the first Enterprise, this second ship would not have been commissioned under current practice, and would not carry the USS prefix. Nevertheless, the Navy considers this ship a part of the USS Enterprise lineage.

The current USS Enterprise — the eighth ship in the United States Navy to bear the name Enterprise — steams along side Long Beach and Bainbridge in formation in the Mediterranean, 18 June 1964. Enterprise crewmembers are spelling out Einstein's equation on the flight deck. This Enterprise is set to be decommissioned in 2013, and as a result there is a growing movement to name one of the CVN-21 class carriers (preferably CVN-78) Enterprise.

* USS Enterprise (1799-12-17 â€" 1823-07-09), the third ship to bear this name, was a schooner, and fired the first shots in the First Barbary War against the Tripolitain ship Tripoli. â€" Navy File
* USS Enterprise (1831-12-15 â€" 1844-06-24), the fourth ship to bear this name, was also a schooner. â€" Navy File
* USS Enterprise (1877-03-16 â€" 1909-10-01), the fifth ship to bear this name, was a screw sloop. â€" Navy File & Pictures: This might be the first Enterprise to carry the USS prefix while in actual service.
* Enterprise (SP-790) (1917 â€" 1919), the sixth ship to bear this name, was a non-commissioned motor yacht serving in the Second Naval District during World War I. â€" Navy File
* USS Enterprise (CV-6) (1938-05-12 â€" 1947-02-17), the seventh ship to bear this name, was an aircraft carrier and the most-decorated U.S. Navy vessel of World War II. â€" Navy File & Pictures
* USS Enterprise (CVN-65) (1961-11-25 â€" Present), the eighth ship to bear this name, was the world's first nuclear aircraft carrier. â€" Navy File A, B, C, D, E, F,: This Enterprise is set to be decomissioned in 2013, and as a result there is a growing movement to name one of the CVN-21 class carriers (preferably CVN-78) Enterprise.

NASA

* Enterprise (OV-101), the first Space Shuttle Orbiter, was used for flight and landing tests. She was rolled out of Rockwell International's Plant 42, Site 1 Palmdale, California assembly facility on 1976-09-17.: NASA does not use the USS prefix for the shuttles.

Star Trek

In the fictional television series Star Trek there have been nine starships that have carried the name Enterprise.

USS Enterprise (NCC-1701-D) from Star Trek: The Next Generation, and Star Trek: Generations.

* USS Enterprise (XCV 330) from Star Trek: The Motion Picture (pictured in a display of ships named Enterprise)
* Enterprise (NX-01) from Star Trek: Enterprise (only called USS Enterprise in a graphic from the episode "Divergence", which was probably an error)
* USS Enterprise (NCC-1701) from the Star Trek pilot and original series, The Motion Picture, The Wrath of Khan, and The Search for Spock.
* USS Enterprise (NCC-1701-A) from the movies; Star Trek IV: The Voyage Home, V: The Final Frontier, and VI: The Undiscovered Country.
* USS Enterprise (NCC-1701-B) from the movie Star Trek: Generations.

* USS Enterprise (NCC-1701-J) from the "Azati Prime" episode of Star Trek: Enterprise.
