USS Enterprise

For other references see HMS Enterprise.
USS Enterprise may refer to:
Eight ships in the
United States Navy have carried the name
Enterprise. The prefix
USS (for
United States Ship) was not used until the late 1790s[
1], and until 1907 was only one of a number of prefixes used. Since 1907 the prefix has been used for all
commissioned (and only for commissioned) ships of the U.S. Navy. In common usage, ship name prefixes are often applied retroactively to ships of the line that would have had said prefix under current practice. The
Dictionary of American Naval Fighting Ships defines
Enterprise as
"Boldness, energy, and invention in practical affairs." (DANFS Vol II (1963), p. 355)

USS Enterprise (1775-05-18 â€" 1777-07-07), the first ship to bear this name, was originally the uncommissioned British
sloop George, captured by American forces in the
Revolutionary War. Rechristened
Enterprise, she served on
Lake Champlain. â€"

Enterprise (1776-12-20 â€" 1777 February), the second ship to bear this name, was a successful
privateer before she was purchased for the
Continental Navy. Commanded by Captain Joseph Campbell, the
schooner Enterprise operated principally in
Chesapeake Bay. She
convoyed transports, carried out reconnaissance, and guarded the shores against foraging raids by the British. Only meager records of her service have been found; they indicate that she was apparently returned to the
Maryland Council of Safety. â€"
Navy File:
Due to the concurrent service of the first Enterprise, this second ship would not have been commissioned under current practice, and would not carry the USS prefix. Nevertheless, the Navy considers this ship a part of the USS Enterprise lineage. |
The current USS Enterprise — the eighth ship in the United States Navy to bear the name Enterprise — steams along side Long Beach and Bainbridge in formation in the Mediterranean, 18 June 1964. Enterprise crewmembers are spelling out Einstein's equation on the flight deck. This Enterprise is set to be decommissioned in 2013, and as a result there is a growing movement to name one of the CVN-21 class carriers (preferably CVN-78) Enterprise. |
