Vale of Pickering
The
Vale of Pickering is the flat area in
North Yorkshire,
England, between the
North York Moors (to the north), and the
Yorkshire Wolds (to the south). To the east the flat area extends to
Scarborough, and to the west it merges with the
Vale of York.
The Vale is drained by the
Derwent, which rises on the North York Moors near Scarborough, but heads west, and then heads through
Malton before eventually joining the
River Ouse at
York. The
River Rye, a tributary of the Derwent, drains the western part of the Vale, coming out of
Rye Dale. Places in or on the edge of the vale are
Pickering,
Helmsley,
Kirkbymoorside, Malton,
Easingwold, and
Thornton le Dale.
