Veliky Ustyug
Veliky Ustyug () is a town in
Vologda Oblast,
Russia. It is located at the confluence of the
Sukhona and
Yug Rivers. Population: 33,419 (2002); 36,000 (1970).
History of name: first town on this place (
Gleden () was crated near mouth of a
Yug River (
South River) into
Sukhona River (after this two rivers forming one â€"
Northern Dvina). In Russian

Veliky ().
The town of Veliky Ustyug was first mentioned in a
chronicle in 1207. It was a part of the
Vladimir-Suzdal Principality. Located at the crossroads of the most important
trade routes, the city turned into a big commercial and industrial center in the sixteenth – seventeenth centuries. Veliky Ustyug lost its significance due to gradual relocation of the Russian
foreign trade to the shores of the
Baltic Sea. The city is known for its remarkable
handicrafts, such as
silver filigree,
birch bark fretwork, decorative
copper binding, and
niello.
Veliky Ustyug is also the birthplace of
Semyon Dezhnev,
Yerofey Khabarov, and
Vladimir Atlasov.
