Vernon Reid

Vernon Reid

Vernon Reid (born August 22, 1958) is an African American guitar player perhaps best known as the founder and primary songwriter of heavy metal group Living Colour.

Reid was born in London, but grew up in New York City. His earliest recordings are with former Ornette Coleman drummer and composer Ronald Shannon Jackson, with whom Reid collaborated for much of the 1980s, before forming Living Colour.

Reid has released only two solo albums, but has been active in music, recording or performing with such diverse musicians as Jack Bruce, Bill Frisell, Public Enemy, Rollins Band, Tracy Chapman and DJ Logic. Reid has produced two acclaimed albums for James Blood Ulmer.Reid also plays on the D.J. Spooky/Dave Lombardo collaboration, Drums of Death.

In 1985, Reid co-founded the Black Rock Coalition 1 with journalist Greg Tate and producer Konda Mason. Through the BRC, Reid hoped to counter the pigeonholing and marginalization of black musicians.
