West Salem is a village in
La Crosse County,
Wisconsin, along the
La Crosse River. It is part of the
La Crosse, Wisconsin Metropolitan Statistical Area. The population was 4,540 at the 2000 census.

census of 2000, there were 4,540 people, 1,706 households, and 1,230 families residing in the village. The
population density was 736.5/km² (1,911.2/mi²). There were 1,765 housing units at an average density of 286.3/km² (743.0/mi²). The racial makeup of the village was 98.04%

other races, and 0.53% from two or more races.
Hispanic or
Latino of any race were 0.59% of the population.
There were 1,706 households out of which 41.4% had children under the age of 18 living with them, 59.0% were
married couples living together, 9.3% had a female householder with no husband present, and 27.9% were non-families. 23.6% of all households were made up of individuals and 10.3% had someone living alone who was 65 years of age or older. The average household size was 2.61 and the average family size was 3.09.
In the village the population was spread out with 30.0% under the age of 18, 6.3% from 18 to 24, 31.9% from 25 to 44, 18.9% from 45 to 64, and 12.8% who were 65 years of age or older. The median age was 34 years. For every 100 females there were 95.6 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there were 86.6 males.
The median income for a household in the village was $43,449, and the median income for a family was $50,176. Males had a median income of $34,459 versus $22,439 for females. The
per capita income for the village was $19,904. About 3.3% of families and 3.5% of the population were below the
poverty line, including 4.0% of those under age 18 and 3.4% of those age 65 or over.
