Wigan (UK Parliament constituency)
Wigan is a
constituency represented in the
House of Commons of the
Parliament of the United Kingdom. It elects one
Member of Parliament (MP) by the
first past the post system of election.
Traditionally one of Labour's most secure strongholds,
Wigan was once a mining town (before the pits all around the town closed), and is famous for
rugby league,
Northern Soul,
Wigan Pier,
Uncle Joe's Mintballs,
George Formby and now its Premiership Football Team. In short, a town that has always had a lively culture, and a political loyalty to the Labour Party, despite the fact there is little evidence of social or economic problems. Despite conservative areas in the town such as
Swinley and
Orrell, its terraced housing and council estates (generally much less deprived than other such areas in the North West as well) have always kept it Labour.
