WRFN-LP
WRFN is a community
LPFM radio station in
Nashville, Tennessee. It operates at a
frequency of 98.9 MHz and is branded as
Radio Free Nashville. The station features a mix of music, talk and public affairs programming, almost all with a decidedly
liberal or
leftist political perspective largely not found on other area media outlets. WRFN is the only radio station in Tennessee to broadcast programming from the
Pacifica network.
The station went on the air in
April 2005, with transmitters and studios located at the nearby community of
Pasquo, Tennessee, 15 miles west of downtown
Nashville. WRFN occupies the same frequency as
WANT, which also broadcasts to the Nashville market, but which is located approximately 30 miles east of Nashville; due to the very low power to which WRFN is limited, it causes little interference to WANT's audience.
However, the
Lebanon, Tenn.-based WANT has complained about WRFN's alleged encroachment on its broadcast signal; in response, WRFN is in the process of relocating its transmitter and tower, in order to comply with
Federal Communications Commission channel separation regulations, according to the "Nashville Scene" newspaper.
