Question
Hellom Michael,Do you know if the federal reserve is part of the government or are they independent?Thank you,Tom

Answer
Hi Tom,

The Federal Reserve is part of the Federal Government.  The Board is appointed by the President and confirmed by Congress.  However, it is also semi-autonomous.  Members of the Board are appointed to long staggered terms.  They do not serve at the pleasure of the President like members of the Cabinet do.  The board also has considerable authority granted by law to act on its own discretion without seeking permission from Congress or the President.

I hope this helps!

Experience

As an attorney for the Center for Individual Rights, I worked on a number of free speech cases, including Rosenberger v. Univ. of Virginia, in which the Supreme Court upheld my clients' right to run a student newspaper without discrimination because of its religious conent. I also worked on White v. Julian, which protected the right of people to protest against a homeless shelter in their neighborhood.

I also worked for the Federal Election Commission on several cases regarding the right to participate in the election process.
