Question
i have been told the constitution has been suspended since 1933 when the country went bankrupt- is this true and is the constitution still suspended?

Answer
Hi Janis,

The US has never gone bankrupt, not in 1933, not ever.  The US Constitution has also never been suspended, although the right of Habeas Corpus was suspended briefly during the Civil War.  There have been times when certain Constitutional liberties have been ignored or strangely interpreted, but the document has never been suspended.  In fact the Constitution has been used by the Supreme Court more often since 1933 then in the years before.

I hope this helps!

Experience

As an attorney for the Center for Individual Rights, I worked on a number of free speech cases, including Rosenberger v. Univ. of Virginia, in which the Supreme Court upheld my clients' right to run a student newspaper without discrimination because of its religious conent. I also worked on White v. Julian, which protected the right of people to protest against a homeless shelter in their neighborhood.

I also worked for the Federal Election Commission on several cases regarding the right to participate in the election process.
