Answer
Hi Elizabeth,

From a legal standpoint, you may be fine.  Most states have set the age of consent for sex at 16.  The exact age varies by State.  You don't say where you are from, but you can view a list here:

I would recommend double checking the statutes in your state (usually available online) to make sure this web site is not mistaken or out of date.

Also, keep in mind that sex is not the only issue.  Even sexual touching or nudity can result in a finding of criminal activity.

But assuming your relationship is completely innocent, there is nothing illegal about spending time with a 19 year old.

However, there may be reasons that your mother sees that, based on her experience, makes her think there will be trouble.  It might be worth at least sitting down with her with an open mind and listening to her concerns.  Your mother, rightly or wrongly, is trying to look out for your best interests.  You should at least give some respect to her opinions.

I hope this helps!
