Question
My name is Kristen and I am 16 years old. My boyfriend and I have been talking about having sex. He is 18 and has had sex before, I have not. I am not scared to actually have sex, but I am scared about the consequences. I have 3 siblings all under the age of 3, so I know what having a kid would be like, and I dont want that to happen to me. So,that being said, what kind of condoms work best? could I still get pregnant if we used a condom? Can I get birth control without my parents finding out? thanks in advance. ~~Kristen

Answer
Hey Kristen! Thanks for the question. Birth control is really important (as you noticed). Condoms can be fairly effective when used properly. That is, you put them on before any genital contact is made, it stays intact, and he wears one everytime. If a condom has a spermicidal (usually a chemical called Nonoxynol-9 or N-9) that will also decrease the risk of pregnancy. Another tip I've heard is that sheepskin condoms are not as effective (stick to latex). Since your boyfriend is not a virgin, remember that condoms are more effective in preventing STD's than a birth control pill which offers no protection. I'm not a condom expert, though, and these people are: http://www.plannedparenthood.org/condoms/truth.html
There is still a slight chance of getting pregnant when using a condom. Personally, I have been using condoms for 6 years and have never been pregnant so I have some trust in the condom. In terms of getting birth control without your parents finding out, this may be more difficult; a gynecologist needs to prescribe birth control pills. You could try calling a gynecologist or planned parenthood clinic near you (1-800-230-PLAN) and ask what their privacy policies are. I really hope things work out for you Kristen. Take care~ Kathryn
