About Tom
Expertise
While it is a huge topic, I am well-versed in World War II generally. There is a huge wealth of information available on the internet, HOWEVER, one has to know the trash from the gems. Many sites which are not obviously credible (govt, university, and museum sites, for ex.), provide erroneous information (intentionally or otherwise).

Experience
BA in history, and been reading and studying WW2 as my 'hobby' for 30 years. Regular contributor to several online forums in military history, WW2, and related areas and topics.

Organizations
None relevant to this topic.

Education/Credentials
BA, History (Secondary Education), with minor in Geography
US Army Engineer Officer (Officer Basic and Advanced Courses)

20th Century History - WW2

Expert: Tom - 7/31/2008

Question
hi sir ,who are you ,sorry for bothering you.
i like to ask you "when did the world war2 begin and when did it finish exactaly?
thank you for you your time .
i hope you answer me thank you

Answer
Funny thing about WW2 - there is more than one answer!

Most common, most specific:
Sept 1, 1939 (German invasion of Poland)  -  Sept 2, 1945 (Japan surrenders)

But, in the US, the war officially continued until Dec 31, 1946, when the US govt declared the war at an end.

Now, China was invaded by Japan starting in 1931 (Japan invaded Manchuria region of China), but the real war didn't start until 1937 when Japan began invading the rest of China.  Strangely enough, China never got around to actually declaring war on Japan until Dec 8, 1941!

Also, just a technicality, but the Soviet Union (Russia) has never signed a peace treaty with Japan.  They still disupte three islands off the northern coast of Hokkaido.

So the first answer is the most commonly accepted, but the true answer is 1931 - today, since officially the war didn't end between Japan and Russia.
