AboutMichael FitzGerald Expertise I am an expert in German history between 1918 and 1945, particularly with regard to the Nazi era. I am also very knowledgeable about most areas of philosophy (I have an honours degree in the subject) and am able to answer questions on that subject too. In addition, I am very knowledgeable about poetry. One of my hobbies is also politics, mainly British and European though I follow the US political scene as well. Another one is the history of crime and punishment and British social history (the two often overlap!) I am willing to answer questions on all the above issues.

Question What is your opinion on current punishments available in the West?
Answer Dear Oliver,
Thank you for your question. I am not entirely clear to what extent you wish me to go into the legal issues and have made the (perhaps mistaken) assumption that you are referring to the criminal law.
In my opinion, the death penalty is barbaric and should be outlawed throughout the world (as it is in the majority of democratic countries). As for imprisonment, it seems to me that there are serious flaws in the present system. People are being locked up for minor crimes and pedophiles, rapists and murderers are being let loose to create havoc. This cannot be right. I would support a tougher regime for the worst offenders and more non-custodial sentences for minor offences.
If you wish to be more specific, I would be happy to clarify my position on any other related issues.
