About Tom
Expertise
While it is a huge topic, I am well-versed in World War II generally. There is a huge wealth of information available on the internet, HOWEVER, one has to know the trash from the gems. Many sites which are not obviously credible (govt, university, and museum sites, for ex.), provide erroneous information (intentionally or otherwise).

Experience
BA in history, and been reading and studying WW2 as my 'hobby' for 30 years. Regular contributor to several online forums in military history, WW2, and related areas and topics.

Organizations
None relevant to this topic.

Education/Credentials
BA, History (Secondary Education), with minor in Geography
US Army Engineer Officer (Officer Basic and Advanced Courses)

Subject: Indian Partition

Question
Why was India partitioned?

Answer
A major issue for all people on the Indian subcontinent (today's India, Kashmir, Pakistan and Bangladesh), was whether one nation, many nations, or two nations was the best answer.

Generally, Gandhi and many others favored a unitary Indian nation that accepted all peoples, of all faiths, languages, tribes, and castes.  However, many - perhaps most - Muslims did not want to live in a nation where they would be a minority.  What's more, the Hindu majority was considered by some Muslims as unbelievers (or worse!), so to live under "their rule" (Hindus far outnumbered Muslims in Indian subcontinent) was unacceptable.

So initially the states of Pakistan and India formed (about 1948).  Bangladesh was once East Pakistan, but revolted against rule by the western Pakistan government.  This happened about 1971.
