Question I am writing an essay comparing the similarities of witch-hunts in American History. I read The Crucible so the first two are the Salem witch-trails and McCarthyism. I thought Japanese Internment might be good too. I have found similarities such as the governments refusal to accept counter evidence and the idea that fear led people to believe. But, I want to do a comparison of the selfish motives of the accusers. Abigail wants attention -- and John Proctor. McCarthy wants fame so he can be re-elected. But, is there a specific person who might be seen as instigating the internment for selfish reasons? The president? The military? If the only answer is national security, I guess this comparison doesn't work. Any ideas?
Answer firstly, i suggest u find out what actually happened at the salem witch craft trials. Its not a very good peice of historical evidence on which to base ur essay. (abgail was 14 and john procter near on 70).
As the instigater or the Internment I'm sorry i dont know.
How about you use Pres. Bush of an example of how fear can be use to manipulate people. Hell, it got him relected didnt it?
