20th Century History - T.E. Lawrence

Expert: Jesse Nofftz - 4/9/2007

Question
What did T.E Lawrence do in the course of WW1 that makes him so important?

Thanks!

Answer
T.E. Lawrence is better known as Lawrence of Arabia. He is well known by many Arabs because he joined them in their fight for freedom from the Europeans and Ottomans.
Lawrence began working at British Intelligence in about 1915. The fact that he had intimate knowledge of the Arab people made him the perfect liaison between the British and Arab peoples. For that reason in 1916 he was sent out to the desert to fight alongside Arab troops under the command of Emir Faisal. His troop performed many guerilla actions against the forces of the Ottoman Empire.
Lawrence's major actions in the First World War consisted of the following actions; Lawrence convinced the Arab leaders to coordinate their attacks on the Ottomans with the British forces. He persuaded the Arabs not to drive the Ottomans out of Medina, thus tieing up their forces. This action allowed them to attack the railroad which was supplying the garrison of Ottomans. This cut the off from all supplies. He then coordinated an attack on the port city of Aqaba. For this action he was promoted to the rank of major.
Following this campaign Lawrence was involved in the capture of the city of Damascus. He was then promoted to Lt. Colonel.
After the war Lawrence attempted to convince his British superiors that helping the Arabs gain freedom would be in their best interest. He did so with mixed success.

   I hope this information helps.

Sincerely,
  Jesse Nofftz
