About Tom
Expertise
While it is a huge topic, I am well-versed in World War II generally. There is a huge wealth of information available on the internet, HOWEVER, one has to know the trash from the gems. Many sites which are not obviously credible (govt, university, and museum sites, for ex.), provide erroneous information (intentionally or otherwise).

Experience
BA in history, and been reading and studying WW2 as my 'hobby' for 30 years. Regular contributor to several online forums in military history, WW2, and related areas and topics.

Organizations
None relevant to this topic.

Education/Credentials
BA, History (Secondary Education), with minor in Geography
US Army Engineer Officer (Officer Basic and Advanced Courses)

20th Century History - causes of WWII

Expert: Tom - 5/26/2006

Question
What were the causes of World War Two? I know that possibly the main cause of conflict was the Nazis in Germany (overall, Hitler), but were there other conflicts? Such as Pearl Harbor...but what I do not understand is how Japan was kind of alliances with Germany. Thank you!

Answer
The answer depends mostly upon how complex of an answer do you seek.

I like the answer provided in this website, as he starts with the simplistic answer, and then goes on to give detailed causes - from that you can get some fairly complex and involved thinking of cause/effect.

For a summation (there are some details herein that I disagree with, such as Hitler wanted to dominate the _world_), this is a decent site:

And of course, these sites include links to other sites, books, and resources that could provide additional information - and even conflicting accounts and information (after all, history involves a lot of debate).
