AboutTom Expertise While it is a huge topic, I am well-versed in World War II generally. There is a huge wealth of information available on the internet, HOWEVER, one has to know the trash from the gems. Many sites which are not obviously credible (govt, university, and museum sites, for ex.), provide erroneous information (intentionally or otherwise).

BUT Colonel Tibbits' mother is reported to have been named after a character in a novel...and I am also trying to find that novel!

The answer is if not wrong, deficient. Tibbets's mother was named after a character in one of Augusta Evans Wilson's novels, a best selling author at the turn of the century. He named his plane after her and, thus, by a degree, after the character. Try St. Elmo, Marcaria, Buelah or Inez.
