Question Hi Cyndi,
I'm a writer for Rice Addict magazine. An Asian American magazine here in Houston, Texas. Our next issue is going to be about the '80's, and I was wondering if you could give me more info about the enigmatic officer Harry Truman Ioki.
I pretty much know the basic info on the character. Like he was actually Vietnamese named Vinh Van Tran and stuff. But, if you know of faqs that are more obscure, I'd really appreciate it if you could send them my way.
I remember that the character just vanished without pomp or circumstance. What happened to him? Why did he leave? Stuff like that.
Thanks for your assistance!
Andy
Answer Hi,
Toward the end of season 4, they showed him becoming increasingly dissatisfied with his life, as he was isolated with no friends except his fellow officers. There was a Vietnamese street gang that he went undercover to infiltrate, and he befriended some of them and felt torn between his job and his new friends. Then at one point he developed a minor pill addiction. They showed some conflict between him and Doug Penhall on a couple of occasions...one was when Doug was undercover as a "dirty cop" who was shaking down Asian restaurants and stores, and Ioki actually believed he'd do this. Another time was when Doug adopted a little boy and put Ioki in danger by leaving him alone on a stakeout when his son was in the ER.
Unfortunately, we were never given any actual reason for his leaving or saw him leave, the same as Tom Hanson (Johnny Depp) - they were just gone when Season 5 started and never referred to again.
