Question
HI,

Back in 1988 I was convicted of a class e felony, I did something stupid and broke into a hardware store in New York City and stole tools. this has haunted me my whole life. crappy jobs and mistrust. I have not had any problems since and have moved to North Carolina recently. I want to be able to go hunting with my buddies and have a gun for protection in my home. What can I do.

Answer
North Carolina does not allow for convicted felons to carry firearms.  As for the job situation you must return to NYC Probation Dept. and apply for a Certificate of Relief from Disabilities, this way jobs are not allowed by law to discriminate against you unless your conviction specifically relates to the position you are seeking. For instance a drug conviction will prevent you from working in a pharmacy or hospital.  NYC will not give you firearm restorations for whatever reason they have stopped offering firearm restorations.  If you did state time in prison you can apply to the NYS Dept of Parole and ask for a Certificate of Good Conduct.

Good Luck
