2nd Amendment and Right to Bear Arms/obtaining a gun

Question
Hi, I was arrested when I was 17 years old in NY in 1996 for criminal possession of a controlled substance. I spent over a year in jail and 5 years probation. I now live in Fl and haven't been in any trouble since then.(maybe a speeding ticket or two) I was wondering if there was any way possible to obtaining a gun legally.

Answer
You will have to fill out an application for NYS Certificate of good conduct.  You need 3 years of IRS tax transcripts, and anything good you have been doing for the last 12 years.  This is assuming you did state time.  Not local jail time like Rikers Island or the tombs. If you only did local jail time you will not get your firearm rights restored unless you got a lawyer and spent money.  It may be worth it if you have it.  You can get the application online by googling NYS Certificate of good conduct.
