QuestionI was given a Certificate of Relief from Disabilities 15 years ago, when I was sentenced to 3 mos. and five years probation, for possession of stolen property in NY, an e felony. The Certificate was signed and dated on the same date of conviction and has no restrictions. no other trouble since. Would I be able to legally own AR rifle (or any other long rifle)? Would I be able to own a handgun?
AnswerYes, you can own any firearm as long as you can get approved for a firearm permit. NY as you may know has very strict firearm rules. You will have to get a Lawyers assistance before NYC will give you a permit. You can apply for a Florida or Viginia non-resident permit to help with your case in getting a New York permit. Virginia is the easiest and fastest permit to receive @ the Virginia State Police website you can download the application. I received my CRD from NY 4 years after my probation sentence of 5 years with no restrictions and I qualified for Virginia and a Florida permit. NY refused to give me the Corrections officer job because they said I would not get a NY firearm permit. I'm in the process of getting my Lawyer now. My sentencing was 19 years ago. My CRD has box C checked yours should have box A checked.
GOOD LUCK
