Question
i am a convicted felon for narcotic's possesion in 1997 and ended parole
2001, in n.y., been in no major trouble (conviction's) and now living in v.a.
recently i voted (2008) i want to buy a rifle , do you think my rights have
already been restored since i was able to vote? if not what exactly do i have to
do? im already waitng for my certifcate of relief an good conduct from n.y.
whats next? thank you

Answer
Your certifiate of relief will do it as long as they don't put any restrictions on it.  You can also apply for Virginia Executive Clemency as well.  Download the application on their website.  NY will likely put a firearm restriction on your certificate so I would not rely on that alone.  A VA certificate will have a firearm rstricition as well but you can go to court and request firearm rights reinstatement in VA.  Then you will be able to apply and receive a VA CCW Permit.  NY allows all convicted felons to vote once your sentence is complete so VA will not be able to stop you from voting but your firearm rights are different.  Some states allow felons long guns in the home just ask your local gun dealer he may be able to help you with that answer better in VA.
