2nd Amendment and Right to Bear Arms/Owning guns

Question
Two years ago (age 22), I was charged with Misdemeanor reckless driving in Florida (Volusia County): 90 day license suspension and 6 months Misd. probation.  During this time I was not allowed to own/posses a weapon at any kind.

My father passed away 2 years ago, in addition, and I was left with his enormous collection of Class 1- Class weapons (ranging from handguns, shotguns, rifles both semi and fully-automatic)  He lived in Las Vegas.

My questions are as follows:
In live in Tennessee now (age 24).  Am I allowed to own and possess those guns, even if they are all in my name as per the will agreement?  Right now they are in safes at my mothers house.

Secondly, What must I do to sell off his collection of fully automatic/semi automatic assault style weapons?  Do I have to bring them to a Class III dealer?

Thank you for your help.

Nate

Answer
Hi, Nate...

I'm not sure of what Florida statute there is which would make you a prohibited person for a non-violent misdemeanor.

Before you consider taking possession of your late father's firearms collection, you need to clear up your status under your previous conviction.

And since your father passed away two years ago, you need to find out the present status of his firearms in your mother's care and custody. Does she have the necessary license(s) to have possession of Class 3 firearms?

Assuming everything else is in order and you are in a position to legally sell or otherwise dispose of your late father's collection, then yes, a Class 3 dealer is the place to start.

But at the same time I would caution you that:

a] "Assault" is a form of behavior, not a type of weapon;

b]  Given that the legislation which took effect 19 May 1986 made civilian ownership
of Class 3 weapons illegal, your father's full-auto firearms are quite valuable. Be
certain that you find someone reputable with whom to do business.

Good luck to you...
