Question
Hi
I am a convicted felon in the state of La. I admit that I made some mistake in my past but since 1990 I have walked a straight line and changed my life. I now reside In TX and would like to purchase a handgun along with a permit. DO I need to do anything to clear up before I can do this. I was alway under the assumption that time restored my right to be a gun owner. Please advise as to what has to be done to have that right. Tks

Answer
You have to get restoration of firearm rights from the state in which you was convicted.  Some states you can download an application online by searching LA restoration of firearm rights.  The application should be self explanatory and if you have been walking a straight line meaning no other convictions, stable employment (paying taxes)and good reason why you need restoration of firearm rights.  You may want to just apply for restoration of rights first.  By Federal law if your certificate does not state you CAN'T own, possess or transport firearms then you should be cleared in most states.   You may or may not need a lawyer.

Good Luck!!!
