Question
Do you need an FFL to purchase a firearm online? if so how do you go about getting one? if it makes any difference i live in colorado.

Answer
Technically speaking, you do not need an FFL to "purchase" a firearm online. However, you do need to use the services of an FFL to take delivery of it if the seller resides in another state.

Federal law requires that one possess an FFL to RECEIVE a firearm in interstate commerce. The seller does not need to be an FFL or use one to ship the firearm. However, the seller may only ship the firearm to another state if the recipient is an FFL.

So, if you win an online auction for a gun, you will need to work with an FFL in your state. Your local FFL will send a signed copy of his or her license to the seller. The seller will then ship the firearm to the FFL. You can then pick up the firearm from the FFL, completing the necessary paperwork and undergoing the NICS check at that time.

If you need to locate an FFL to assist you with the transaction, go to the Shotgun News website (www.shotgunnews.com) and search for one near you.
