Question
In 2003 I pled guilty to felony assualt that was pled down to a misdemeanor crime of violence. This is the only thing on my record and I was wondering what the chances are of being able to petition the court (609.165) to restore my firearm rights in order to hunt again? No firearm was used in the assault and I had hunted previously.

Answer
Misdemeanor crimes do not prevent you from having a firearm unless it was a domestic violence conviction.  You may have to secure a firearm permit first before you will be able to pass the NICS checks since it was reduced to a misdemeanor.
