2nd Amendment and Right to Bear Arms/Fire Arms ID Card

Question
I plead guilty to 3rd degree assault in New York 36 years ago. I was 18 years old. I have led an exemplary since that time. I now live in New Jersey and want to apply for a Fire Arms Purchaser's ID card. I did receive a Certificate of Release from Civil Disabilities after successfully completing my probation. Can I successfully apply for the ID card? Do I have to report the incident on the application although I was granted the certificate? Is there anything else I can do to better my chances?

Answer
New Jersey is very strict from my experience NJ will deny your application because of the conviction.  You can always appeal the decision because your firearm rights are restored unless your NYS CRD states you can't own, possess or transport a weapon.  Look up Federal Firearm Code 18. U.S.C 921 (A)(20) for restoration of rights. What you can do is apply for a Virginia Non Resident Permit so you can have proof that your NYS CRD gives you firearm restoration.
