QuestionIn '98 I received a convection of 5 years in TDC for DWI. I was never involved in a wreck, never destroyed any property, public nor private (and I DO thank God for this). I miss my hunting, I have tried archery but it's not the same. I have not been in any trouble of any kind - not even a speeding ticket, in the past 5 years. I would like to hunting and would like to own a good 12 ga. shotgun or even a .22 cal rifle... what must/can I do to correct this. I have a very profitable job and pay all my bills on time, I am 53 years of age and have grandchildren coming of age to take hunting, I don't want them to miss out on what I had experience as a child hunting in the woods with my father and grandfather. I have heard that black powder may be another option (?). Can you help me????
thanks, thom
AnswerThere are no Federal Laws preventing someone with a DWI from receiving a firearm unless their was a felony conviction. Most States do band you under local laws if you have been charged with a DWI within five years. You will have to search under your state local firearm laws to see what their ruling is on DWI and Firearms. I believe you are cleared since there was no damage or lost of life. Usually the firearm permit application has a question that states have you been found guilty of DWI or DUI within 5 years? Get your State firearm application and see what it says.
Good Luck
