2nd Amendment and Right to Bear Arms/Can I own a gun??
Expert: n/a - 7/20/2008
QuestionBack in 1992-93 I was convicted of theft which included a couple of different charges like theft by unlawful taking etc.. I got felonies because 1 was a car and allot of the stuff added up to be more than $2000 which is considered felony.. I got like 3 or 4 felonies.. I did 6 months in jail.. I've never been in trouble since and never will be again, I messed up badly I know.. I did ask the PO I had if I could get my record expunged and he asked the district attorney which said if I had some dirt on the judge I might have a chance.. I'm going to see about restoring my rights.. Is this possible in my case so I can own a gun to take my boys hunting?? Can I hunt with someone else's gun?? Thank you so much for your time and everything you do..
AnswerI don't know what State you are from but with 3 or 4 felonies I don't think you will have your firearm rights restored. In NYS they have a certificate of good conduct which restores rights for more than one felony but I don't think many other states do the same. Virginia and Florida have a good policy on non-violent restoration of rights.
As far as going hunting with someone else weapon, No you are a felon who does not have his full restoration of rights so you can't possess a weapon legally until you do so.
I don't know how they can convict you of 3 felonies at one time and you only served 6 months in jail. Maybe they ran everything concurrent and you have one felony but charged with 3 or 4 felonies. check on that because that is a big difference.
Good Luck
