Question
QUESTION: If someone had a record of a convicted felony theft in 1990, than a  felony burglary in 1991, a gross misdemeanor DWI in 1994. Served time in prison in 2005 for the 2 felonies.  What are the chances of being allowed to sign up for gun safety class with a 13 years old child, getting the safety permit and applying for a hunting licenses?  And will i be able to own my own fire arm? We are in US , Minnesota..

ANSWER: Someone had better see about obtaining a Governor pardon. I know that with two felony convictions you cannot own a firearm. I recommend seeking legal counsel before you proceed to sign up for the gun safety class etc.

QUESTION: In this situation, The gun safty class was completed in late 2007. The felon who signed the 13 yr old child up does not have custody, nor had the mother authorized it until it was over. If I understand this correctly. Don't you have to answer a question on the safty paperwork that asks if you are a felon? Or does that depentd on the location of the corse? I also thought it was against the law of owning a firearm. Can this be pardoned and removed from someone record to regain the hunting and owning a firearm with a federal or state agency?  I really appreciate your help. And i do understand that you are not legal councel. Any information i can get on this subject is helpful to me.

Answer
Dear Christine,

I am glad that you understand that I am not legal counsel.

Yes, you most likely have to answer the question on whether or not you are a convicted felon.

If you are a convicted felon, you cannot own a firearm.

Some states do offer pardons for felons. This is where you would need to get legal assistance to determine if this is feasible for you.

If you are in Minnesota, I recommend contacting legal help specializing in felony pardons.

If I can be of any further assistance, please contact me again.
