Question
I was treated at a mental health facility in California in 1996, first under WIC 5150 and then WIC 5250.  The 5250 hold placed a 5-year California prohibition on firearms ownership, however I have since learned that it also placed a lifetime Federal firearms prohibition on me.  I moved to another state for a few years, but now I reside in California again.

I have no convictions or any other mental health prohibitions on my record.  How can I go about getting this prohibition removed?

You will have to get a letter from a mental health Doctor stating you are not a risk and are cleared to own, possess and purchase firearms.  When you are turned down by the NICS check you will have to appeal it with the letter.  If BATFE accepts it they will lift your firearm restrictions.
