Question
I was convicted in 1996 of a misdemeanor domestic violence charge in Virginia.  I would like to start hunting again after all these years, is it possible? I have been told that I may have to start with Clemency, however I thought that was for felons?

Answer
Domestic Violence convictions today are grounds for firearm resrictions according to the federal firearm code.  You will have to first get Executive Clemency in the Commonwealth of Virginia.  You can download the application online.  You will be dealng with Mr. Micah Womack of the Executive Clemency Board.  This will take about 6 months to complete they will also check your driving record as well.  This will not give you firearm restoration, you will have to return to court and request firearm restoration using your Executive Clemency Certificate.  Being that you don't have a felony you may be able to skip the executive clemency process and just petition the court for your firearm rights. But you must have a good reason why you would like to carry a weapon.  I suggest to become an Armed Security Officer.
