Question
Hello Dan,
I'm a Canadian immigrant with a green card and I just got out of the marine corps.  I'm living with my parents until I start school in the fall.  I'd like to purchase some firearms for hunting and personal defense.  I'm a legal resident of Texas and have been for over six years.  The issue I'm encountering is that since I am not yet a U.S. citizen they want proof of my residence in the form of utility bills with my name on them.  since I live with my folks for free I have no utility bills.  do you know of any other legal way for me to provide proof of residency?  I've read that I can purchase firearms from individuals but I'm not sure how that works either.  Any light you could shed on the subject for me would be great.

sincerely

Answer
Hi Olaf,

Thanks for asking. I have experienced a similar situation with one of my green card customers. They said he would have to provide 3 months of utility bills with his name.

You can buy guns as a private party transaction from individuals offering them for sale.

If you go through a dealer then the utility bill requirement applies.

I hope this helps you out.
