Question
I live in New York, I was convicted of a non violent crime and received a felony 13 years ago. I went to buy a shotgun for hunting and was denied. Where do I start to get my rights back

Answer
You can't own any long guns or pistols with a felony in New York.  A felony is a felony rather it's violent or non-violent.  The difference is when you apply for relief they take in consideration wether your conviction was violent or not.  You need a Certificate of Relief from disabilities from the probation Dept. You need to fill out the application and be interviewed.  If you served state time you can go to NYS Parole website and download an application. If you only served jail time or probation you will have to return to the courts and fill out the application and have the Judge sign it and return it to the probation Dept. for an interview.  Your CRD can't have any restrictions.  So when you apply check box B not C.
