Question
In state of california is it leagal to own a handgun if convicted of a felony, then have it reduced to  misdomeanor and dismissed?

Same question for state of North Carolina which I have recieved a handgun purchase permit yesteday?

Answer
James,

Thanks for asking. Even if the charges are reduced, it would still show up on the background check. You would have to get the Felony pardoned or expunged by legal means. This is a Federal law so specific state laws may or may not mean the same thing.

When you go to purchase a handgun, the dealers run your information through NICS, and this is where you would run into trouble.

Best wishes,

Dan
