2nd Amendment and Right to Bear Arms/hunting and target pistol permit

Question
I'm attempting to file for a pistol permit (hunting and target) in Saratoga County NY. Problem is I have a felony DWI in 2006, and am currently on year three of a five year probation. I have my CRD reinstating my right to possess and transport arms. My probation officer assures me i'm well within my right to apply for my pistol permit. I have two questions: 1) Do I need to wait for a period of time before I apply?
2)Will getting a Virginia non resident permit improve my chances of getting my NYS permit?
Thank you for your time.
Nate

Answer
There is one problem I see that will prevent you from getting your firearm permit, That is because you are still on probation.  Getting a VA non-resident permit may help your situation if you must go before a Judge in an appeal process but not when you first apply.

Good Luck
