QuestionI worked security at a rest/bar when i was 19 and broke up a fight between some patrons who later called the cops and pressed charges. So i and the other security members were charged with assault 3rd by very apologetic cops who said there was nothing they could do because the patrons had called first. I was later contacted by one of the patrons who apologized and asked what he could do to get the charges dropped. So after calling the judge and DA he was told that since it was in the system they could not drop the charges. So on my court date i met with the ADA and explained the situation which he said he understood since he also had worked security when he was in college. He said the best he could do was for me to plead no contest to disorderly conduct and pay a small fine and it would be over. Nothing would be on my record. Being young and not having money for a lawyer this seemed like a good idea. But now I'm applying for my ccw and am worried this will affect the outcome. What do you think? Thanks alot for your time
AnswerWell it obviously was not a felony or a domestic violence case so just answer the questions correctly and let the court know about the arrest and fine. Don't try to hide it. Only a felony or a domestic violence misdemeanor conviction is grounds for firearm restriction. You are still able to obtain a firearm permit but remember in NY they are a may issue state so it's at their discretion.
Good Luck
