Question
QUESTION: I pleaded guilty 11yrs ago for a dispute between me and my ex-wife even though i felt they did not charge her for her involvement. I pleaded guilty so I could simply pay the fine and move on with my career as a Soldier, not knowing that it would effect my future.  This July puts me at 19yrs active Army and my rights to purchase a firearm has been denied. I have serve 3 tours in Iraq and I would like to know, what can I do to restore my rights considering I work with weapons on the job and do not pose a threat to society. I would like to have a firearm solely for protection of my family and property.

ANSWER: You will have to apply for full restoration of rights in the state you was convicted.  Every state is different hopefully your state has an easy process like Virginia and Florida.  It's usually done through the Dept. of Parole/Probation some states have executive clemency boards or board of pardons.  You will have to check what process your state uses.

QUESTION: The state of Ga, mentioned I need to request a pardon since I pleaded guilty to simple assault, I just want to have my rights to own a firearm back considering I been carrying one with the Army this long. I feel that Ga justice system is giving me the run-around.

Answer
OK, Then request a Pardon if thats what you need to do.  A Jag should be able to assist you in the process.  Or maybe a private Lawyer.  Once you go in front of a Judge if that is part of the process, you should have no problem getting your rights restored with your background.  Getting a few Military references won't hurt either.  Domestic violence is one of the hardest convictions to get guns rights back for.  So you have to have patients and stay consistent but it can be done.  Are you staying in GA. when you retire?  If not check the process in the state you are relocating to, some states will restore your rights even if you had an out of state conviction such as Pa. and Virginia.
