Question
QUESTION: I plead no contest to illegal carrying of firearm charge in 2005. Sentence to 1 year probation (misdemeanor?).  No other charges ever.  Does this conviction stop me from gun ownership or obtaining a Concealed Carry Permit?

ANSWER: You conviction is not a federal restriction on firearms, however many states will restrict you based on having a gun violation on your record.  It's at the discretion of the CCW issuing agency.  You may want to try both an Armed Security License and/or CCW Permit if they are issued by different agencies.

Good Luck

QUESTION: Just to clarify, please confirm gun OWNERSHIP under this circumstance is, or is not legal, and the CCW permit is the only thing in question.

Answer
You can own a firearm because you dont have a felony or a domestic violence conviction.  You
may not receive a firearm permit because your conviction is a gun violation misdemeanor. In some states like Virginia you need to wait five years after your misdemeanor conviction before you can get a permit.
