Question
QUESTION: I am living with and engaged to a convicted felon. I know that he is not allowed to own guns legally. He says that he is not even allowed to have 'access' to guns being a convicted felon(He is not on parole or probation). I have no intention of giving up my right to bear arms but how do we keep him from getting into trouble if a cop comes into my home or if I have my pistol in the car with us on road trips?

ANSWER: Nicki,

Thanks for asking. In your home keep the guns locked up. In your car, place you gun to where he cannot access it only you can. he is correct about not being able to access guns.

One thing to consider is legal help to file for a pardon or to expunge his record. This would give him his gun rights back.

Best regards,

Dan

QUESTION: Dan,
Thanks so much for the quick response!
The guns at home are locked in a safe and he doesn't have the combination, we did that while he was on parole. We are planning a road trip and I want to take my pistol, it is in a gun bag and has a lock on it. If I locked it and kept the key on me would that be considered 'ok' and out of his 'reach'? He doesn't want me to take it with us, but I would feel safer taking it with us.

Answer
Nicki,

That should be ok as long as it is locked up and he cannot get it out. One word of advice is to check the state laws on guns in cars as they differ from one state to the next. I do not blame you for wanting to take the gun with you. I do even in my home town.
