2nd Amendment and Right to Bear Arms/Handgun purchase delay in oregon.

Question
Hi, I recently went to purchase a 22. cal Ruger. I have had contact with the Oregon state police and they tell me that it is an old charge from 1986 that is holding up my purchase. Now I just purchased a weapon on 2/7/2011. And they said that my old record had changed? It did not affect the decision. What did was a older case that involved a DUI and a set of Nunchuk's.(counseled weapon). The whole thing was a Misdemeanor and plead out probation served. This all happened in 1986. I know I was no angle, but I am not a Felon or the perpetrator of Domestic Violence. I also had a Possession of Marijuana Misdemeanor as well. Shouldn't I still be allowed to purchase a handgun??

Answer
Steven,

Thanks for asking. IMHO it appears that your drug possession charge could be the problem. As per Federal Firearm laws, crimes of drugs & violence will disqualify you from owning firearms. With legal help you may be able to expunge or pardon your record and that would enable you to own guns.

Best regards,

Dan
