Question
I have to write an essay on the second amendment for History...I was wondering, why was the second amendmant validated, when was it raified, and what was the reason it was desired by the people (and government?)Thanks!

Answer
It was part of the Bill of Rights (amendments 1-10)
that were added to make the constitution acceptable to the states. The Constitution would have been radified with out  the Bill of Right added. Congress added it Sept. 25, 1789 and radified Dec 15, 1791.  It was part of the orginal radification of the constitution. The right to bar arms by the people was a protection against forgien invasion, Indian attack, civil unrest and protection incase the government had become oppressive. Its major reason was to protect the people from the government.
The well regulated refered to standardized military arms. So that if need it the Militia would have standardized military arms if they called.
Article 1 section 8 of the Constitution states Congress
is to provide arms ammo and training for the militia.
This currently done by providing M1 rifles
(like in WWII movies) and Ammo at a low price
by the Civilian Marksmanship Program.

Training is provided through the National Rifle Association competition.

Remember why the British were marching to Lexington & Concord, in part it was to seize a Arsenal and Powder Mill. Gun were not a controversial issue virtually
home had a musket, rifle or shotgun to protect themself and feed thier family.  Pistols were carried for personal protection. It was just another tool. Infact they were sold in hardware stores.
