2nd Amendment and Right to Bear Arms/"bright finish" guns

Question
What is a "bright" or "in the white" finish on a firearm? Does this mean there is no prtoective finish at all on the metal? If so ,would this not be a maintenance nightmare? I see this finish on some Civil War guns & replicas. Thanks.

Answer
Peter... you again!

With the information you've provided, I'm working in the dark here.

"Bright" has always meant to my mind a highly polished stainless finish, since that's how Colt's started using the term 20 or so years back.

"In the white" means no finish, just as it comes out of the final metallurgical process. (And just so as I'm clear on this, "bluing" is not considered a "protective finish," but a "decorative" one.)
