What does the right to bear arms really mean?  Does it imply that there should be a gun in every house, or a more general right to be able to defend oneself?

No only that you have the Right to private firarms ownership,
like the right to freedom of religion it your choose to excersize that right.

or a more general right to be able to defend oneself?

To get the entire picture you should read the Federalist papers.
To defend yourself, feed your family, or even overthow the gov if it becomes represive. These are but a few.

The Right to Keep means you my have privately owned firearms in you home.
It is not reqiured but a right you have.

Bear Arms means that you may carry your arms.
You need the read the entire 2nd amend.
Remember that the rules of English at THAT time apply.
Well Regulated=trained
That clause is subordinate Right to keep & bear arms shall not be infrined.
