Expert: Don Reed Date: 7/5/2008 Subject: can i own a firearm when iam an adult
Question I was recently in juvenile court for a felony offence Terroristic threats. And since i had no previous record they offered me a consent decree which states that if i complete my probation without being in anymore trouble they will dismiss and destroy the record. My lawyer said that a consent decree is not a conviction and i did not have to enter a plea. He said that it also not being adjudicated delinquent. The reason why iam asking is because iam a civil war reenactor and the weapon i borrow from my dad is classified as a modern weapon because it uses modern ammunition. I am very worried and i don't want to have to give up my gun rights when i turn 18.
If it helps this happened in Pennsylvania And when i was 17 years old, I was not charged as an adult.
Answer Juvenile offenses are not held against you unless charged as an adult. You may have to apply and receive a firearm permit at age 21 in order to purchase a handgun. Reason why is because you may not pass the NICS check when you try to purchase a handgun without a handgun permit.
