Question
What would you say the basic unit of a 3d graphic would be?

I would say vector but my teacher at school claims itīs polygons.

I try to explain that a polygon cannot excist without vectors but then he says that a polygon is still the basic unit of a 3d graphic. ?

Answer
Considering this teacher's answers, you don't will be able to make a spline rendereable, because splines aren't based on polygons (the basic unit of a 3D graphic as teacher says) but vectors.
Then, my answer is:  you're right, you can't say that something is the basic unit of any system when you found anything that is smaller than that unit.
