About Carl Brandt
Expertise
Will discuss suspensions, lifts, lockers along with tire suggestions. Trail ratings and possible requirements needed for specific type of trails. Safety equipment and what you should carry with you. Certified off-road instructor. I am not a mechanic, and 4-Wheeling is a hobby, so if I can't answer a technical question it is due to my mechanical knowledge being related to vehicles that I have owned, or have worked on. I do not have manuals on all vehicles.

Experience
Experience in the area
40 plus years of 4 wheeling in a variety of vehicles. At the present time, my major off-road rig is a 94 Jeep Wrangler with a spring over and a 3 1/2" suspension lift. This gives me a total lift of 9" or so. I have lockers front and rear. I have removed the track bars, and sway bar for maximum articulation. I am running a stock 2.5 ltr 4 cylinder with a Jacobs ignition along with a K&N air filter. It has 4.56:1 gears with a Dodge NV4500 transmission along with a 3.8:1 Atlas II transfer case. This gives me a final ratio of 95:1 in low gear/low range. Other vehicles I own, are a 95 Ford F-250 with a 6" lift, posi rear end, 35" MT's, 5 speed with a fuel injected 460 ci engine, and a stock 2000 Grand Cherokee. Trails I have run are the Rubicon (10 times), Dusey Ershim, Fordyce Creek trail, McGrew trail, several trails in Moab, Utah along with local monthly runs.

Subject: JeepGC making loud humming noise when started

Question
Hi. I'm hoping you can lead me in the right direction here. I have a 95JeepGC.
It started getting cold this past week and yesterday  I started it and it had a loud
humming noise from the front. Ilet it run for about
for a few minutes then it stopped. Then it did it again today when I 1st started it then it went away. What would be the cause of this?
Also another question is when I drive it on long distances(atlease 30miles)
after I get off the interstate it will not make a sharp turn, its makes a clunking sound
and jolts hard as I attempt slowly to turn either direction. If I drive just
intown its fine or if I let it set after a long drive it stops.

What causes this and what would I need to do to fix this?  Is it serious enough
I shouldn't drive it long distances until its fixed? Thank you

Answer
Jennifer,

The first thing that I would check, would be your fan belt.  If it is slipping then it could make the humming sound.  This could explain your steering problem also.  When you make a turn, the fan belt turns your power steering pump and if it is slipping the pump may not be working properly.

This is just a real quick guess, as there are other components that could cause this, such as a faulty component in the front axle, such as a wheel bearing going bad.

If the fan belt is tight and working properly, then I would take it into a reputable front end shop, and have the bearings and steering components checked out.

Carl
